Is it worth upgrading from a PS4 controller to a PS5 or Xbox controller for PC gaming?

I'm currently using a PS4 controller and I'm wondering if upgrading to a newer PS5 or Xbox controller would be a significant improvement, particularly for single-player games like Elden Ring, Assassin's Creed, Nier, and Devil May Cry. Will I really notice a difference in my gaming experience with these newer controllers?

Honestly, for the types of games you're playing, you probably won't see much difference. The newer Steam controller has cool features like virtual menus on the trackpads, which might be interesting, but for single-player games, I think the PS4 controller is just fine. If you're looking for peripheries, those extra back buttons on the new controllers can be helpful if you have trouble reaching the regular buttons, but that's about it.

If your PS4 controller is still working well, I wouldn't bother upgrading just yet. When the time comes, you can find third-party controllers that work great and are way cheaper! I have an 8bitdo controller that I use with my Switch and it cost me about $20. While the DualSense is excellent, it also comes with a steep price tag.

I've played on both newer controllers and I think they perform similarly for PC gaming. If you're leaning towards a PlayStation controller, just pick the one that feels better in your hands. Comfort is key, no matter which generation you've got!

I wouldn’t upgrade right now. The first-party controllers can be pretty unreliable; I've had my share of issues with both Xbox and PS5 controllers. I actually switched to Gamesir controllers and they've been great for me—much better quality than some of the official ones. They even have versions that mimic the PlayStation layout, so you might want to check those out!
