Is it worth upgrading from an i5-12F to an i7-14700K for gaming?

I'm a Rainbow Six Siege player and I'm considering upgrading my CPU. Currently, I have an Intel i5-12F paired with a 4060 8GB GPU, 36GB of RAM, and an ASRock B660M Phantom Gaming 4 motherboard. AMD CPUs aren't an option for me right now, so I'm looking for advice on whether jumping to an i7-14700K is worthwhile or if there are better alternatives.

I'd say hold off on that CPU upgrade and instead look at getting a better GPU like the RX 9060 XT or RTX 5060 Ti. I think your GPU is bottlenecking your performance more than your CPU right now. You can check GPU utilization in games using tools like Nvidia overlay or MSI Afterburner to see if it’s maxed out.

That's true, I've been getting pretty consistent 300 FPS with my setup. Seems like a solid number to me!

300 FPS? That's actually solid. Back in the day, I was playing on consoles at under 30 FPS and thought it was fine!

You might want to consider going for an i5-13600K or i5-14600K instead. They could provide a better performance-to-price ratio and tend to have fewer stability issues compared to the 13th and 14th gen CPUs.

With the existing issues that the 13th and 14th gen CPUs have had, I’d stick with your current 12th gen for now. It’s serving you well enough!

Check out this review with benchmarks for the i7-14700K specifically in Rainbow Six Siege. It might give you a better idea of how it performs: https://gamersnexus.net/cpus/intel-desperate-i7-14700k-cpu-review-benchmarks-gaming.

Upgrading to an i7-14700K would give you a performance boost, but if you mainly play less CPU-intensive games, the difference might only be around 5-10%. Consider investing in a GPU upgrade instead for a bigger impact on performance.
