Hey everyone! I'm thinking about upgrading my setup from an Intel i7 11700kf to a Ryzen 7800x3d. I'm not very experienced with building PCs, but I want to prepare for eventually getting a 50 series GPU when I can afford it. Here's my current build:
- Asrock Z590-c/ac
- RTX 3080
- i7-11700kf
Do you guys think it's a good idea to upgrade both the motherboard and CPU now, or should I just wait it out?

If you’re moving forward with the upgrade, be wary of Asrock motherboards with x3d CPUs as they can have reliability issues. But it’s a good time to upgrade if you feel it's right, especially with upcoming releases on AM5.
The x3d processors are great for 1080p gaming, so if that’s your focus, it’s worth it. However, if you're planning on going for a higher resolution in the future, consider whether the expense makes sense now. There’s a good chance you won't game at 1080p for long if you're getting an RTX 50.
If you're gaming on a 5070 or lower, you really don’t need to upgrade your i7 just yet. Overclocking it could give you some extra power, but if you do choose to upgrade, consider looking for deals at places like Micro Center. Sometimes a regular Ryzen can give you better value without much loss in performance.
Honestly, it depends on your current gaming experience and whether you can afford the upgrade. The Ryzen 7800x3d is a solid choice, especially since AM5 has a good lifespan ahead. I've upgraded from a Ryzen 7 5700x to the 7800x3d, and it's been fantastic for gaming. I got it at a great price too!
What motherboard are you using with it?
It really comes down to what types of games you're playing. If you're into heavy multiplayer games like MMORPGs or Tarkov, the upgrade would be amazing. For single-player at 4K, the boost might not be as noticeable.
Not sure where you got that idea. The x3d helps with lower frame times and stuttering, which is crucial at any resolution.
