Is It Worth Upgrading My CPU If I Play Games at 4K?

I'm currently gaming on a 4K, 144Hz monitor with a decent setup: an i7 8700K processor, 32GB of DDR4 RAM, and a 9070 XT graphics card. With the steep prices for DDR5 RAM, I'm trying to figure out if upgrading my CPU would make a significant difference in performance, given that 4K gaming is mostly GPU-driven compared to lower resolutions like 1440p or 1080p. I'm considering a potential upgrade to something like a Ryzen 5700X, but I'm not sure if that'll yield any noticeable benefits in my 4K gaming experience. Any advice or insights would be really helpful!

If you do decide to upgrade, aim for a CPU that supports DDR5, as that will be better for future-proofing your system. But right now, the difference at 4K won't be groundbreaking with just a CPU swap. Consider waiting until DDR5 prices drop before making a major investment.

You're looking at maybe a slight improvement with a new CPU, but it may not be significant enough to justify the cost, especially when you're sticking with 4K. You should definitely compare benchmarks of your games with potential CPUs to see if you’d really benefit. For most configurations, you might find that your current setup is more than capable at 4K.

At 4K, you’re likely not going to notice a huge boost from a CPU upgrade. Most of the load is on your GPU. If you’re gaming with real-time strategy or simulation games, a better CPU might help, but otherwise, I wouldn't stress it too much. You could also consider overclocking your 8700K for a little extra performance without a full upgrade.

Upgrading your CPU might actually help, especially since the i7 8700K can be a bit limiting for your 9070 XT. Even though 4K is primarily GPU-bound, a stronger CPU can still enhance performance in certain scenarios, particularly in specific types of games where CPU power plays a bigger role. It could improve frame rates in CPU-intensive titles or during heavy gameplay.

Before considering an upgrade, ask yourself if your current setup is having any issues. Is your CPU struggling during gameplay? If you're seeing utilization around 60-70%, that generally indicates it's handling things pretty well, especially for 4K. It's important to recognize that many games won't really benefit much from a CPU upgrade at that resolution.

I do notice that my CPU hardly ever maxes out, so maybe it’s working fine as is. Just wanted to know if there’s more performance to be squeezed out with a better CPU.
