Is It Worth Upgrading My GPU or Building a New PC?

I built my PC back in 2018 with decent specs: Intel i9-9900K, Aorus Z390 Ultra motherboard, 32 GB of DDR4 RAM, and an RTX 2080 GPU. I'm currently gaming at 1080p and it's treating me well, but now I'm looking to upgrade to 1440p gaming. To do that, I think I should upgrade my GPU to something more capable, like either a 9070 XT or an RTX 5070 Ti.

However, I've found that upgrading the GPU might mean I need to remove the HDD cage in my NZXT H440 case or even consider buying a new case altogether. Another concern is that my CPU could bottleneck performance since it's an older model. This makes me wonder if I'd also end up needing to upgrade my CPU, which means buying a new motherboard and switching to DDR5 RAM—both of which are costly right now.

Given this situation, my questions are: Is it feasible to just upgrade the GPU for my goals? Should I consider building a whole new system instead, or stick with my current setup for a couple more years? I'm also contemplating console gaming as an alternative, but I'm mainly focused on getting long-term value from my investment. Thanks for your insights!

You don't really need to swap out your CPU right now; you can still hit over 150 FPS at 1440p with just a GPU upgrade. The RTX 2080 can handle some games at 1440p too, so maybe grab a monitor first to test it out. If you can't run your favorite games smoothly, then go for the 9070 XT. Your i9 is still capable enough for most games.

If you're aiming for a solid long-term setup, consider the AM5 platform for future-proofing. Make a decision based on your budget and interest. If you plan to upgrade your whole system later, holding off is okay as the GPU will still provide a significant upgrade for your gaming now. Keep an eye out for deals!

Look, your CPU is older, but it's still comparable to newer mid-range ones. A GPU upgrade will definitely make a significant difference. If you want more longevity, you might want to consider the AMD AM5 platform for future upgrades, but that means spending more money now.

Just upgrade the GPU, you'll be fine for 1440p without stressing about a CPU change for now. The i9-9900K holds strong, and you’ll only lose a bit of FPS depending on the game. I'd say the 9070 XT is the better deal compared to the 5070 Ti if you're not too concerned about features like DLSS.

Grab that GPU! At 1440p, it's usually your graphics card that limits performance, not the CPU. The 9070 XT will last you a good few years. Just remember to get a strong PSU if you're upgrading the GPU, something reliable like a 1000W model would be great.
