Is it worth upgrading to a new motherboard and CPU or just the CPU for now?

I built my PC back in 2020 and have done a few upgrades since then. I currently have a B450M motherboard with an AMD Ryzen 5 3600, a 3060 Ti GPU, and 32GB of RAM. Recently, I've noticed that my big games are only running at about 40-60 fps on medium to high settings at 1080p. I'm definitely looking to upgrade my CPU, but I'm wondering if I should also invest in a new motherboard that supports DDR5 and AM5 socket. However, I'm aware that a new motherboard would also require new RAM, which can be quite expensive. Should I just upgrade the CPU for now and save the motherboard upgrade for later?

Honestly, if you need a quick upgrade, go for a good deal on a 5000 series CPU, like the 5600 or something close. If you’re not ready to spend on a whole new setup with a new motherboard and RAM, this is a solid path. Just check for GPU limitations too, since your 3060 Ti might still hold you back.

If you're not planning on upgrading your GPU anytime soon, then upgrading your CPU and motherboard might not give you the performance boost you're hoping for. Even with a new CPU, your 3060 Ti could bottleneck your gaming experience, so consider just updating to a Ryzen 5 5600 instead if that’s the real limitation right now. That's probably your best bet without diving into the DDR5 and all that expense right away.

Letting you know that if you can find a good combo deal at a local shop, it might be worth it to upgrade the whole setup. Micro Center, for example, sometimes has awesome combo deals. Otherwise, I'd say go ahead with an AM4 upgrade for now and then plan for a full upgrade when it makes more sense financially.

If your budget allows, consider taking the plunge and upgrading everything. But if it’s tight, I’d highly recommend sticking with your current setup for now and just grabbing a new AM4 processor. You can keep costs lower by not having to buy new RAM and a motherboard. Wait until the tech matures and prices drop!

I’d say stick with what you have for now and just upgrade to a better AM4 CPU. You’ve got 32GB of RAM, which is great, and DDR5 is just so pricey right now. A 5500X or similar would give you a nice bump in performance without all the costs of changing your motherboard and RAM too. You can always save and do a full upgrade later.
