Is it worth using a VGA monitor as a second screen with a converter?

I have an old 1080p monitor that uses a VGA connection. I'm considering getting an HDMI to VGA converter to use it as a second monitor for my laptop. I mainly want to use it for work tasks, but I might do some light gaming as well. Also, can I connect my Nintendo Switch dock to this converter and play on the monitor at my work desk? I realize there wouldn't be sound through the monitor, but would it work if I connected headphones or speakers directly to the Switch? Any thoughts?

Whether it’s worth it really depends on how good the colors and image quality are on that monitor. Since it’s using VGA, it might not have the best color representation. The good news is, converters are pretty cheap, so it’s worth a shot! It should work with both your laptop and the Switch, but I’m not sure about audio while connected to a monitor. You can probably plug in headphones or speakers directly to the Switch, though.

I hear you on the colors; my monitor is older too and I’m not sure if it’ll hold up. I just found mine after a while and was surprised to see it had VGA instead of HDMI.

Right? I thought all monitors had HDMI these days. But hey, if it works for your desk setup, it's worth trying!

Yeah, it should work, but just keep in mind that the picture might not be as sharp as you’d get from an HDMI monitor. The quality really depends on the monitor itself—some older monitors look fine over VGA.

That’s true! The quality might be decent depending on the monitor. I had one with both HDMI and VGA and honestly, I didn’t notice much difference when I switched to HDMI later.

That's interesting! I have a similar situation and now I'm curious if mine can do the same.
