Is it worth using my old laptop for practicing Linux?

I just stumbled upon my old Acer Aspire ES1-511 laptop. It's seen better days, with some rust and a pretty messed up keyboard. Currently, it runs Windows 8, which I really dislike despite some nostalgic icons. I don't have it connected to Wi-Fi yet, and I'm debating whether to leave it as a relic or attempt to install Linux instead. Since I've never used Linux before, I'm considering this as a risk-free way to learn; if I mess up, I won't be too upset about losing Windows 8. But can this old machine even handle Linux? What do you think?

Before diving in, check how much RAM your laptop has. Also, make sure to back up any important data just in case. You could use Ventoy to create a Live USB; it's pretty easy to set up and will let you try different Linux distros like Debian or Linux Mint. Just have fun exploring!

Thanks for the tips! I tried creating the Live USB, but the screen's blank. Any ideas on what might be wrong?

Absolutely, it can run Linux! I'd actually recommend installing it to get the full experience. You can try booting from a USB without losing your Windows 8 installation first. It's a great way to dive in!

Linux is super lightweight and can work well on older hardware, so you should be good to go with something like Xfce or LXQt!
