Is Learning Kubernetes Beneficial for Network Engineers?

Hey everyone! I'm currently a network engineer who's transitioned into a role focusing on Python automation, primarily in networking tasks. However, I feel like I've hit a plateau because I haven't learned anything new in over a year. I've been trying to apply for jobs in DevOps and software engineering but keep getting turned down due to my lack of experience with cloud tools and Kubernetes. I've enjoyed working with Terraform and Ansible, and I've heard that Kubernetes could be a fun area to explore. My question is: as a network engineer, do you think learning Kubernetes would be beneficial for my career? Is it worth the investment of time and effort?

Absolutely, diving into Kubernetes can open up new doors for network engineers! Many of my peers in networking roles are managing aspects like pod and service CIDRs, handling routing between nodes, and implementing network policies. Plus, concepts such as load balancing and service meshes (like Istio or Linkerd) are becoming crucial in cloud environments. Kubernetes could definitely enrich your skill set in a way that aligns with your background!

That's a solid point! It looks like there's a lot to manage on the networking side of K8s. I wonder if there are many job openings specifically for network engineers that know K8s.

Also, it seems like learning the monitoring tools that integrate with K8s could be a great add-on for your resume!

I totally get where you're coming from; the job market has been rough! Still, I think investing time in learning Kubernetes as a network engineer is a smart move. Expanding your knowledge in areas like Ingress and Gateway APIs will definitely make you more appealing in the job market. Plus, if you're familiar with load balancing tools like Traefik or Envoy that'll definitely set you apart!

Great suggestion! I've heard that mastering monitoring tools like Prometheus can really enhance job prospects too.

Would love to connect and chat about this! Networking skills integrated with Kubernetes seem quite rare and valuable.
