I'm considering getting an i5 12400F right now, but I'm worried about the upgrade path for LGA 1700. I've heard about some instability issues with the 13th and 14th generation chips. Would it be better to go with the AM4 socket, like a Ryzen 5 3600 or 5500, instead? I'm also curious about the X3D chips, but they're hard to find.

Both platforms do have some pricey options but don't expect any major discounts anytime soon. The best move might be to build what you can afford now, and then plan for a new platform upgrade down the line.
Honestly, neither option has a great upgrade path anymore. The 14900K is the fastest chip for LGA 1700, but it’s significantly more expensive and not really a value if you're starting with a 12400F. If you're building a DDR4 system now, I'd say prepare for it not to have any significant upgrades in the future.
LGA 1700 has some solid gaming CPUs left, like the 14600K. It’s still worth considering if you're all about gaming performance.
If you can swing LGA 1700, it’s a good pick over AM4. Plus, if you can find a deal on AM5, that would be the best direction for future-proofing. They did roll out a BIOS update that fixed those stability issues for the 13th and 14th gen, so make sure to update it after upgrading.
