Is Linux a Good Choice for Gaming Instead of Windows 11?

Hey everyone! I'm really fed up with Windows 11 and all the intrusive features it has. I'm considering switching to Linux solely for gaming. My PC is mainly for gaming, but I might also do some CAD, 3D modeling, or programming in the future, so I could dual boot with Windows if needed. I'm curious about how reliable Linux is for gaming, especially for games I buy from Steam and Xbox Game Pass. Are there any specific Linux distributions that are great for gaming? What should I be aware of when moving away from Windows? Ideally, I'd love for all my games to run smoothly on Linux.

Just a heads-up, there isn't an Xbox app for Linux, so accessing Game Pass might be tricky. Most games do work fine, but watch out for Kernel Level Anti-Cheat; that's a big hurdle for competitive games like Fortnite and Valorant. Those won't run on Linux unfortunately.

You can play some games directly in the browser though, like I just started Fortnite on CachyOS using Firefox. The latency isn't too bad, kind of like playing on a TV.

Yeah, Kernel Level Anti-Cheat is a dealbreaker for my gaming PC too! That's why I'm still on Windows for all my competitive FPS games.

If you enjoy FPS games, I’d suggest dual booting with Windows and Linux for the best experience. For Linux, I recommend Bazzite. Most games should work since Steam has a compatibility tool called Proton that helps run Windows games on Linux. Give it a shot!

Sounds like a solid plan! I mainly play RPGs and retro games, so I think I’ll be fine. I’ll check out both that Linux build and Proton, thanks!
