Is Linux Worth Installing for Developers?

I'm a web developer and I've never used Linux before, aside from studying it briefly for a practical exam. I'm really curious if installing Linux would actually benefit me or if it's just a trend. Can Linux do everything that Windows or Mac can do? Will all the software I need run on it? Also, what's the speed comparison between Linux and Windows? I have an old i3 laptop and I'm considering installing Linux on it. Should I go for it? If yes, which Linux distribution would be a good starting point for me?

If you love open-source and thrive on tinkering, Linux might be perfect for you! It's great for reviving old computers and offers plenty of choices. But if you're happy with Windows or Mac, then you probably don't need to switch.

Not all software runs on Linux, that's true. But if you're looking to give it a try, just pick a distro you like the look of and install it on your old laptop. You might have a great time exploring it! Just keep in mind that it can be a bit of a learning curve to adjust from Windows.

Linux can definitely help, especially if you have older hardware. It's more resource-efficient, more secure, and has a lot of tools that many developers find useful. However, while it's beneficial for some, it's not a one-size-fits-all solution. Some folks really need Windows for specific software and tasks. For example, my neighbor switched to Linux on her old laptop, and it really improved her experience compared to the sluggish Windows 10. But remember, not every Windows user can make the switch without losing some functionality.

You should definitely consider trying Linux! Just be aware that it requires some time to learn. If you go in expecting it to be exactly like Windows, you may get frustrated. Ubuntu or Mint are popular choices for beginners, and they have plenty of support available. Ultimately, whether it’s worth it will depend on your willingness to adapt and explore.

Honestly, it's just hype for some people. If you’re just curious, go ahead and check it out! Linux is just like any other OS. But if your current setup works for you, there's no need to change.
