Is my 550W PSU enough for an RTX 5070 and 5800XT setup?

I'm looking to extend the life of my gaming rig for about another five years while keeping costs reasonable. Right now, I've got an Asrock B550 Pro motherboard, a Ryzen 5800XT, and 32GB of DDR4 RAM at 3200MHz. My power supply is an EVGA SuperNOVA 550W 80+ Gold Modular. According to the Asrock power supply calculator, my setup comes in at around 460W, which is around 80% of my PSU's limit. I want to know if this is acceptable or if I'm at risk of damaging my equipment.

While your PSU could technically handle this setup, it’s definitely cutting it close. Gaming combos like yours can hit the upper limits of power draw, so I'd recommend upgrading. A 650W to 750W range would give you some breathing room and ensure stability, especially considering you’re using newer, more demanding components.

Also remember, the actual power draw is one thing, but the quality of power delivery matters too. The RTX 5070 will likely draw about 250W sustained, so ideally, you'll want a dedicated PCI-E cable that can handle that load. Don’t forget that peripherals add to total power use too.

You're really pushing it with a 550W PSU for an RTX 5070. Generally, they recommend at least a 650W for a solid buffer. The power requirement can vary with the card model, and custom versions may need even more. If you can swing it, a 650W or 750W PSU would be a much safer bet and will give you upgrade potential in the future.

How old is your PSU? They can lose some capacity over time; if it’s nearing 5 years old, that could be concerning. Worst case, your system would shut down during stress. For reference, consider checking power supply guidelines specific to your GPU and CPU pairing.

Good point about everything plugged into your PC! External devices can add to the power draw. It might be wise to incorporate a powered USB hub to ease that load, which can help keep your PSU operating smoothly.
