Is My Mom’s PC Beyond Repair After My Dad Unplugged It?

Hey everyone, I think my mom's PC might be in trouble. It wasn't booting up, and I suspected the power supply unit (PSU) was failing due to an old age issue, especially since the rest of the components are relatively new. While I was trying to diagnose the problem, my dad unplugged the CPU cables while the PC was still on. Now, nothing works at all. I tested it with another known working PSU, but still no power. I'm feeling pretty sure that both the PSU and the motherboard might need to be replaced. I've double-checked all the cables, made sure everything's connected properly, and even cleared the CMOS. Am I missing something obvious before I ask my mom to buy new parts? The hardware includes a Corsair TX650 PSU that's probably over 10 years old and an MSI B550 motherboard.

You might be on the right track. First, check the PSU voltages with a PSU tester to confirm if it’s still working properly. If the voltages are off, then you definitely need a new PSU. If it still doesn’t boot after replacing the PSU, taking it to a repair shop for a thorough inspection might be the next step. Sometimes, motherboards also need to be tested separately on a test bench with different components to see if they work.

Good tip, but my mom is seriously more worried about how long the PC will be down than just buying a new motherboard.
