Is My New GPU at Risk After System Shutdowns?

I just got my hands on the 9070XT today and was super excited to test it out. Previously, I was using a 6800XT with a Corsair HX750i power supply, which is about ten years old. It has been shutting down during heavy loads because it struggles with power spikes. Even though I ordered a new power supply, I couldn't resist trying the new graphics card right away.

While playing the SH2 remake on high settings, my whole system shut down. It was pretty alarming—I had to unplug the power supply and wait before I could turn it back on. Now, I'm really worried about whether this caused any permanent damage to my new GPU. It seems fine so far, but I'm too nervous to use it again. Should I be concerned about damage to my new card?

Don't worry too much! What you experienced is exactly what the safety features are designed to do. If your power supply is functioning correctly, it should shut everything down before any real damage occurs. Just don't try to stress test the card again until you get a better PSU in place!

Yep, that's right! If it shuts down, it means the protection is working. I wouldn't stress it further until you have your new PSU.

Totally agree. It's a good move to wait for that new power supply.

Have you connected your PSU to the motherboard using the USB cable? Also, check if you set your PSU to single rail mode. If you're on multi-rail mode, it might trigger the OCP with powerful GPUs. This could be the issue causing your shutdowns; you might not even need a new PSU if you adjust this!

That's a great point! I had a similar issue and switched to single rail, which solved it for me. Good luck!

I wasn't aware of that feature either! Definitely something I’ll check out before replacing my PSU.
