I recently dug up my old Acer Aspire ES1-511 laptop. It's in rough shape with some rust and a wonky keyboard, but it's still running Windows 8, which I find pretty ugly. Even though I like some nostalgia attached to it, I'm not happy with Windows 8 at all. I'm debating whether to just keep it as a relic or try switching it to Linux. I've never used Linux before, and I think it could be a good learning experience, especially since I wouldn't be too upset about losing Windows 8. Do you think this laptop can even run Linux? Would it be worth the effort?

First, how much RAM does your laptop have? Here are some steps to consider:
1) Back up your data because you might have some important files hidden away.
2) Look into Ventoy to make a bootable USB stick. You can find instructions online.
3) Download some ISO files for Live-USB versions of Linux distributions like Debian or Linux Mint.
4) Have fun exploring Linux! Once you find a desktop environment you like, you can do a full install. Feel free to come back with any questions!
Linux can be quite lightweight and it's known to support older hardware pretty well. You might want to check out desktop environments like Xfce or LXQt since they work great on lower-spec machines.
Yes, it can definitely run Linux! I’d recommend using it directly instead of a VM for a more hands-on experience. If you're worried about keeping Windows 8, you could boot Linux from a USB stick to try it out first without making any changes.
Thanks for the tips! I’m having trouble getting Ventoy to work on my old laptop, though. Any suggestions?
