Hey everyone! I'm looking to upgrade my PC without swapping out my motherboard to save some cash. Initially, I thought I needed to replace it, but after using a Google AI tool for advice, I've learned that I might not need to do that since I'm on a budget. I'm working with an MSI X470 Gaming Plus Max AM4 motherboard and planning to replace my Ryzen 5 3600 with a Ryzen 7 5700X. I know I need to update the BIOS for compatibility, but I also want to swap my power supply for a new Corsair 850 Shift because I've just bought one of their cases. However, PC Part Picker is warning me that the power supply doesn't provide -12V of voltage. I'm not sure what that means and whether it's safe for my motherboard. Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

The -12V rail is pretty much outdated and modern motherboards, like yours, actually don't need it at all. A lot of newer PSUs, including some over the last few years, have dropped the -12V support. You should be fine with the Corsair 850 Shift for your setup!
If you're just swapping the CPU, you might not even need to change the PSU at all. But since you're upgrading quite a bit, it’s a good idea to replace it for stability. By the way, have you considered the Ryzen 5 5800X? It’s only about ten bucks more than the 5700X and could give you better performance for your build!
I get that, but I'm upgrading more than just the CPU. I want to do a rebuild on a budget, and the 5700X fits what I can spend right now on Amazon.

So, the Corsair shift will work well with my MSI X470, right? I've done some digging and it looks good from what I've found.
