I've got a desktop computer from 2018 (with a z370 chipset, i5-8400 processor, and a GTX 1060 GPU) that just failed. I suspect it might be due to either the number of USB devices connected or just old age. The rig came with a Corsair 650W PSU, and I'm unsure if it's still under warranty. Yesterday, while streaming and launching a game from my external SSD, the computer suddenly shut off. I thought it was a power outage since my monitor and router stayed on, but when I restarted it, there was a loud pop followed by silence. I've noticed some odd behavior in the past when recovering from power surges, and I'm wondering if that's related. I've connected multiple USB devices over time, including 4 HDDs and an SSD; could that have overloaded the PSU? Should I just replace it with a higher wattage unit? Any suggestions for brands and additional power protection?

Are you plugging your PSU into a surge protector? I’ve had my 1600W PSU from 2008 working fine, but that’s because it was protected from storms. Also, do you clean out your PC for dust regularly? Dust buildup can cause overheating and failures.
Yes, getting a surge protector is a smart move. Even good built-in protection can fail, especially in storms. Better safe than sorry!
It looks like the PSU was struggling with the power demands, especially if you’ve been dealing with power loss issues before. I don't think the USB devices caused the failure since your PC would just shut down if it couldn’t handle the total wattage. A new PSU is definitely in order, though I’d recommend getting one with a bit more wattage just to be safe. Also, consider getting a UPS battery so you can properly save your work in the future when power dips happen. That might save you a lot of headaches down the line!
Thanks for the reassurance! I’ll definitely be looking for a new PSU. Are there any good recommendations for brands? I heard Gold-rated ones are reliable.
Absolutely, look at brands like Corsair, EVGA, and Seasonic. They have solid reputations, and I’d recommend sticking with at least a Gold rating for efficiency.

I haven’t been using a surge protector since I've always had laptops. However, my house does have built-in protection. Should I definitely invest in something just to be safe?
