Hey everyone! I'm currently working on a budget setup and I need some advice. I just bought a starter rig for about $90, and here are the specs: Ryzen 3 1200 (my ancient scroll), GT 730 4GB (my literal potato), 12GB DDR4 RAM, 500GB SSD + 1TB HDD, A320M Pro VD Plus motherboard, and a 300W PSU (which I'm replacing with an MSI MAG 750W).
I'm getting an XFX RX 6800 XT for a steal at around $225, but my dad, who's a computer engineer, thinks the Ryzen 3 1200 is good enough to handle it. I found a Ryzen 5 5600 that would be a better match but he's not on board with upgrading. Plus, the 6800 XT is a massive card and may not fit in my case without some serious modifications.
I need to know how to explain the concept of CPU bottlenecking to him, and whether I should try building it open-air to demonstrate the fit issue. Also, how much performance am I risking losing with this setup?

Honestly, for your setup, I’d hold off for now and wait to save up for a good CPU and monitor. Upgrading the case makes sense too. But right now, the Ryzen 3 1200 is pretty much a brick for modern gaming. Maybe show him that even at lower settings, you'll be missing a ton due to CPU limitations.
Honestly, a Ryzen 5 5500 would pair much better with your GPU.
In reality, if you can’t run Windows 11 on the 1200, that’s already a sign to upgrade. The Ryzen 5 5600 would be the best bang for your buck as it offers significant improvement. Just confirm that your motherboard supports it, as you might need a BIOS update too.
True, but the 5500 is a cheaper alternative.
You should definitely show him some benchmarks! Videos from HardwareUnboxed comparing the Ryzen CPUs with the RX 6800 XT will make it clear that the 1200 can hold back performance, especially at higher resolutions. A lot of games may struggle to run smoothly at 1080p with that CPU, so it’s good to have evidence to back up your concerns.
Haha, I can’t believe you’re in the similar boat! My friend upgraded to a 9070 XT, and I’m super jealous!
Just make sure it’s not those userbenchmarks, though. They can be misleading!
For now, go with what he says. If you encounter issues later on with performance, loop back and show him the benchmarks. It will be harder for him to deny then. As for the GPU fitting in the case, if the 6800 XT doesn’t fit, get him to help out. That might convince him to upgrade the case.
I might just save up for a new case after I get everything working!
At the end of the day, it’s your dad’s decision since it’s his money. He probably doesn’t realize how demanding modern games are. Just explain that more cores today mean better performance per clock cycle, and show him some gameplay comparisons. The Ryzen 3 1200 is becoming obsolete in gaming, especially for new titles that demand more resources.
I managed to show him some improved benchmarks, and I think he's starting to reconsider!

I hear you! I’ve got a stock Ryzen cooler too. Might be worth investing in a better cooler later.
