Is my Ryzen 9 9900X failure due to defect or build flaw?

My Ryzen 9 9900X just died on me the very first day it was installed, and I've sent it back for warranty. I checked for issues and found no bent pins, burning, or overheating—everything was running at factory settings. I was using Blender when my PC just shut off, and a repair shop confirmed that the CPU was dead. I've asked the shop if my motherboard or power supply could be the culprit, but they told me it's likely just a defect with the CPU itself. However, I'm worried because my motherboard has a 5+2+2 VRM setup, and I thought maybe it needs a more robust 12+2+2 configuration. I've also checked various wattage calculators, and they all say my 650W PSU should be fine, with an ATX 3.1 rating and enough overhead for power spikes. My GPU, an RTX Aorus Master 3070, ran perfectly in my previous build even with a 7-year-old 550W PSU, so I'm leaning towards thinking the PSU isn't the issue. Any thoughts on whether this is a defect or a problem with my build?

It's tough to say, but it sounds like you might have just drawn the short straw with that CPU. From what I've seen, as long as your BIOS is updated—ideally to at least version F2 for the 9900X—you should be safe. Modern boards generally have decent VRMs that can handle most setups, and previous VRM issues were more common in older models. Just bad luck can sometimes strike with these things!

That makes sense. It's good to know VRM issues aren't common these days. Fingers crossed for your replacement to work!
