Hey everyone, we had a cooling issue in our server room recently, but thankfully we caught it quickly. As a result, my boss decided we should install a temperature and humidity sensor in the room. I set it up today, and the humidity readings have been fluctuating between 55% and 75%. I understand that the ideal range is around 40% to 60%, so I'm a bit worried about these fluctuations. We're also planning to replace the AC unit due to a leak, and I'm curious if this humidity issue should influence our choice of the new units. I'm not super knowledgeable about server room cooling systems, so any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

It's really important to keep an eye on the dew point. That's the temperature at which water starts to condense from the air, and it can be a big problem if it's close to the ambient temperature. If your humidity is above 80% when you turn the AC back on, you should adjust the cooling gradually to avoid hitting that dew point too quickly.

I've dealt with humid server rooms too. At one location, humidity spiked to 80% for a few days, but everything survived just fine. Fluctuations are pretty normal, and as long as it’s not consistently above 90%, I wouldn't stress too much about the numbers. Just keep monitoring it! One thing to check though: make sure there's no AC vent blowing into the server room, as that could cause these spikes.

Thanks for the reassurance! I actually expected some fluctuation but I wasn't expecting it to go up by 20%. The sensor was on my desk before, so I thought it might influence the readings. Good to know I can manage for now!
