Is My SSD Dead, or Could It Just Need to Be Reseated?

My 2020 Huawei MateBook X Pro blue-screened a few weeks ago. I took it to a repair shop to reinstall Windows, but they said the Windows installer could not detect the SSD and concluded that the drive had failed. I can still see the SSD listed in the BIOS, though, so I'm wondering whether it might simply be loose rather than dead. The shop wants about 1,500 PHP (roughly $25) just to open the laptop and check it, and they suggested replacing the SSD if they have to open it. Is it worth paying them to reseat and test the drive, or does BIOS detection and the failed Windows installation already point to a dead SSD?

If the SSD is visible in the BIOS, it probably isn’t physically disconnected. However, BIOS detection doesn’t prove that the drive is healthy—it could still be failing. Reseating it is unlikely to fix a drive that is electrically or logically damaged, but it’s a reasonable diagnostic step if the fee is acceptable.

A Windows installer failing to show the SSD doesn’t automatically mean the drive is dead. Some laptops need the appropriate storage or Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver loaded during setup. Check whether the BIOS reports the correct model and capacity, then test the drive with a bootable diagnostic environment such as Hiren’s BootCD PE. You could also connect the SSD to another computer using the correct NVMe-to-USB adapter and see whether it can be read.

Before spending money on repeated installation attempts, ask the shop to test the drive’s health or clone it to another drive. If you need the files, minimize use of the SSD and prioritize recovery, since a failing drive can stop working completely. If you already have backups and the drive reports errors, replacing it and reinstalling Windows will probably be faster and more reliable than paying for extensive troubleshooting.
