I'm finally ready to upgrade my trusty 4790K gaming rig after using it for over 8 years! Recently, I replaced my old GTX 1080 with a 4070 Ti and now I'm looking to update the rest of my system for better longevity. I focus mainly on games like Path of Exile, World of Warcraft, and some FPS titles.
Here's what I'm thinking for the upgrade:
- **CPU**: Ryzen 7 7800X3D
- **Motherboard**: ASRock X870 Pro RS WiFi (ATX)
- **RAM**: G.Skill Ripsaws 2x16GB, DDR5-6000 CL30
- **Cooler**: Deepcool AG400 (for now, I might eventually switch to a Noctua DH15)
- **Storage**: Samsung 990 1TB M.2 (2280)
I plan to reuse my Corsair AX1200i PSU, SSDs, HDDs, and my Corsair Carbide Case. I'm just wondering if there's anything obviously wrong with these options or anything I should keep in mind?

Just a heads up, make sure your RAM supports AMD EXPO to avoid any compatibility issues. The Samsung 990 Evo Plus should be more than fast enough for your needs. If you decide to go with the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, make sure to get a good cooler since it runs hot. If the 7800X3D seems too pricey, consider the Ryzen 7 9700X as a more budget-friendly alternative in your area.
You don’t need to overspend on your cooler. The Thermalright Burst Assassin is a solid choice and is better than the Peerless Assassin for under $40. Also, you should be able to find a great AM5 motherboard for under $160, so don't go overboard on that. Your RAM choice of 6000 CL30 is spot on. The 7800X3D is excellent and offers great value compared to the 7900X3D. However, consider the 2TB Samsung 990 if you can afford it; it might be a good investment depending on your storage needs. Good luck with your build!
Any B850 or X870 motherboard will meet your needs perfectly. I also recommend looking at Thermalright’s dual-tower coolers; they compete quite well with the Noctua DH15 at a lower price point. Just be mindful of the CPU cooler clearance in your Corsair Carbide case, some variants can be a bit tight!
Your upgrade plan sounds really solid! I recommend checking out Hardware Unboxed on YouTube; they do great comparisons and roundups on X870 motherboards that could help you finalize your decision. Best of luck!
Thanks for the tips! I'll definitely check out the Thermalright coolers. I’ve been using a CoolerMaster Hyper212 Evo, which fits fine, and I think the DH15 should fit too since it’s only about 10mm taller.
