Is Pilot Fiber a Good Internet Option in NYC?

I'm considering switching to Pilot Fiber for our internet service in New York City since their pricing is tempting compared to Cogent, which we currently use. However, I've found that most references are over five years old and some reviews suggest they might perform worse than Cogent. In the year and a half that I've been operating this shop, we've experienced a couple of outages, one due to a fiber cut and the other from a fire in their infrastructure. While Pilot's pricing allows for the possibility of adding a FiOS line as a backup, I'm a bit hesitant about failovers based on past experiences. Just to note, our shop operates entirely in the cloud and while we can work remotely, we still have a few staff who prefer to be in the office during the week. I'm looking for current user experiences with Pilot Fiber and any thoughts on their reliability and overall service quality.

I've heard positive things about Pilot too! For added resilience, consider hybrid options like Brooklyn Fiber if your building has a decent line of sight. They might offer a cheaper gigabit solution as well.

While I’m not a current Pilot customer, I used them when I had an office in Manhattan and paired with a Verizon FiOS line for backup. Their use of GPON technology offers multiple dedicated circuits, which is a plus. Even though their peering isn’t the best, I’ve never had throughput issues. They were also super communicative regarding maintenance—always kept us in the loop! I'd choose them again fácilmente, especially over Cogent.

That’s really helpful! It's great to hear that their communication is top-notch. I might lean towards choosing Pilot if I don’t go with FiOS.

Avoid Cogent if you can, especially since they’re still not cooperating with IPv6 peering. As for Pilot, I don’t have personal experience with them, but I’ve heard good things about Stealth Communications in NYC as another option. Just something to consider!

Thanks for that! I’ll definitely look into Stealth. Can never have too many options, right?

I've been using Pilot for a few years now in Midtown Manhattan and haven’t faced any issues. The service has been fast and responsive, and I'd definitely choose them again without hesitation.
