Is Pursuing Computer Science a Good Move for a Mechanical Engineering Graduate?

I'm a mechanical engineering graduate and I've been thinking about transitioning to a career in computer science after gaining some experience. I recently saw a post where someone with a law degree was advised that shifting to tech is possible, but not likely. That got me a bit worried! I have a tech job lined up starting in February 2026 and I'm uncertain about the best path forward. Any advice or insights?

Typically, I'd advise against it, but if you already have a mechanical engineering degree and a software engineering job, it's a viable option. Just weigh your career goals to see if it's worth the risks involved.

Here's my take: Many actual CS graduates are finding it tough to secure software developer positions these days. With so many CS grads out there competing for limited roles, it might be hard for someone without a CS background to break into that field. However, the choice is ultimately yours!

Absolutely go for it! You don't need a degree in computer science to work in tech, unlike fields like law or medicine. Many people in tech have degrees in various fields, and while some job postings are asking for degrees, the market is still quite open. Plus, congrats on landing your new job!
