Is Server 2025 Good as a File Server?

I've been looking into Server 2025 due to our current 2016 server nearing the end of its support in a few months. I've seen some older discussions highlighting issues with domain controller roles, which made me curious. Can anyone share their experiences using Server 2025 as a standard file server? Our setup is pretty simple, and we already have the necessary licenses, so that's not a concern.

Just a heads up, Server 2016 is actually supported until January 2027, so you might have more time than you think. But still, an upgrade is often a smart move, especially considering how lackluster the past versions have been.

It works fine for us! We're mostly using it for DFS-N to help clients connect to Azure file shares, and we haven't encountered any problems.

Honestly, not much has changed in Microsoft’s file services since 2012 R2. The main attractions now are the improvements with SMB 3.0 and later versions. So, if you’re upgrading, those features could make a difference!

I've been using Server 2025 without any problems. It handles file services just like it should. The Domain Controller issues are a different story, but as a file server, it's working great!

Same here, no issues at all. We upgraded from our 2019 file server just a few months after 2025 was released.
