Hey everyone! I'm a third-year computer science student and originally aimed to become a standard software engineer. However, after looking into the job market, I've noticed that landing a job in web or app development seems almost impossible right now. Because of this, I'm considering shifting my focus towards infrastructure, particularly the Help Desk -> SysAdmin -> Cloud/DevOps career path, which appears to be more secure and less crowded. I'm curious if there's anything specific I should know before I make this switch. Any tips or advice?

It's a smart idea to start now! Any help desk experience will help you progress down the road. Something that might seem easy to you could be complicated for others, so focus on honing your communication skills. Being the bridge between tech and real-world applications is crucial. Remember, being good at the work is only half of it; effective communication is the other half. Stay patient, keep learning, and never hesitate to ask questions!
Make sure to network! Seriously, I got my current job because I knew someone from school. Most of our recent hires are alumni. Attend networking events at your school and aim for internships this summer to build connections early on!
Thanks for the advice!
It's worth checking out the different roles you mentioned. Some can really struggle to find jobs right after graduation or after layoffs. But it's true that the developers’ market is pretty saturated now; moving to a less competitive field could be a smart move to secure your future career.
I see what you mean. But it really feels like the dev field is only getting tougher. My goal is to transition to something with better prospects.

Thanks for the advice. I really appreciate it!
