Is Switching to Linux Worth It for College Work?

I'm considering switching my laptop to Linux since it's only going to be used for my college work in computing. Right now, the laptop is in good shape with nothing important stored on it. I want to know if making the switch is worth it and, if so, which Linux version would be best for my needs. I'll primarily be writing code (mostly Python, but I'm branching out into other languages after exams) and working on documents and presentations. Also, I use Teams for college work, but I can use the web version for that.

I use Fedora as my main OS, and it's pretty solid! It's user-friendly, simple, and gives you a taste of the Red Hat Linux environment. It handles coding and presentations really well. If you start getting into Linux and enjoy customizing your system, you might also love Arch Linux later on since it lets you pick and choose what you want on your setup. But for now, I'd definitely recommend sticking with Fedora, or if you want something lighter, give Linux Mint a shot.

Sure, you can switch! A lot of people start with Ubuntu because it’s easy to use. I switched to Ubuntu in 2018 but found the desktop version a bit heavy for my needs, so I built a lighter setup from the Server ISO instead. Right now, I'm using the latest LTS version, and it's working well for me. So, if you're hesitant, maybe start with Ubuntu and see how it goes!

If you're up for it, go for the switch! Testing it out in a virtual machine (VM) for a week or two would be a great way to see if it fits your needs. You can always reinstall Windows if you decide Linux isn't for you. Just be sure to back up anything important before changing systems!
