Is the 5090 a good upgrade for my setup?

I'm considering upgrading to the 5090 for my rig, which currently has a Core Ultra 7 265K, an ROG Maximus Z890 Extreme motherboard, 32GB of DDR5-6000 CL36 RAM, and a 1000W ROG Thor Platinum+ power supply (though I'm thinking I might need to upgrade to 1200W or more). I previously had a 5080, which worked well. I was advised that I need an Ultra 9 for the 5090, but I'm not convinced that's true. My main reason for the upgrade is to enhance 4K gaming capabilities and to future-proof my setup with the extra VRAM and CUDA cores. What do you all think?

The Ultra 9 is just marginally faster—around 2%—so I don't see the point in making that switch if gaming is your primary focus. Stick with your current parts unless you really feel you need to upgrade for specific performance gains. Your power supply is totally fine for what you've got now.

You could probably just drop the 5090 into your rig with the existing setup. 1000W is sufficient unless you're doing some wild overclocking. My rig with a 5090 draws under 800W under load, so you're likely in good shape for gaming.

That's a solid point! If you're just gaming and not pushing it to its limits, the 1000W should suffice.

Honestly, the jump from a 5080 to a 5090 seems excessive unless you really need that extra power. And about your setup, putting a $300 CPU on a $1000 motherboard? That's a bit of overkill. Your 1000W power supply should be more than enough unless you're planning extreme overclocking. How about sticking with the 5080 for now? It's quite capable for 4K with DLSS support.

Yeah, I totally agree! The 5080 can handle 4K gaming quite well, especially with DLSS. Plus, upgrading to a 5090 might not give you the performance you expect.

Exactly! And unless you can get a good price for your 5080, the upgrade might not be worth the cost.

In my experience testing, an overclocked 5080 is about 35-40% slower than a 5090, but keep in mind that you might not see double the performance just because you’re spending double the money. Look into it carefully before making that leap!

That's good advice! It's easy to get caught up in the hype but really assess what you need out of your upgrade.

If you're into 3D modeling or similar tasks, the upgrade might make sense. However, if it’s primarily for gaming, the 5080 should be adequate as it can deliver a smooth 4K experience with some DLSS magic. Honestly, you might find the price of the 5090 hard to justify for the performance gains you're likely to see.
