Is the 9900x Worth It Over the 9800x3d for Gaming?

I'm in the process of building a new computer and initially planned on going for the 9800x3d. However, I noticed that the 9900x is now just over $200 cheaper, which is tempting because it could allow me to upgrade my GPU from a 5070ti to a 5080. I'm planning to game mostly at 1440p, with an upgrade to a 4k monitor down the line. I'd love to know if there's a significant performance difference between using either CPU with a 5070ti at both 1440p and 4k gaming. What are your thoughts?

The performance difference really depends on the game. It's best to check benchmarks for the specific titles you want to play. For most games, especially at 4K, the difference can vary a lot — from almost no difference to around 30%. At higher resolutions, the gains from the 9900x may not be as pronounced, especially if you are looking at mainstream games. If you want to save some cash, consider the 9700X; you'd likely see diminishing returns beyond a certain point with the 9900X.

If you're thinking about the 9800x3d, it definitely has advantages in gaming, particularly in CPU-intensive games like MMORPGs. Even in games where the GPU is a heavy focus, you'd probably still want to utilize DLSS upscaling when playing at 4K. So, the 9800x3d could be worth the extra investment, and honestly, even the 7800x3d might outperform the 9900x.

Also worth considering is the 7800x3d paired with the 5080 if that fits in your budget. It could be a solid combo!

Personally, I usually recommend opting for the best GPU, but in this case, I'm torn. At 4K, the differences in performance due to 3D V-cache aren’t as significant compared to lower resolutions like 1080p. But when it comes to CPU-heavy titles, those differences can be huge. So it's a bit of a trade-off!
