Is the i5-8400 still good for programming in 2023?

I'm currently learning programming on my old Pentium system that's about 13 years old, but it's excruciatingly slow when it comes to compiling. Docker tends to freeze the entire system, which is quite frustrating. I'm considering upgrading to an Intel i5-8400 paired with a GTX 1660 Ti, but I'm wondering if this setup is still worth it for programming tasks while also allowing for some gaming. I'd appreciate any insights!

Keep in mind that upgrading to the i5-8400 means you'll probably need a new motherboard and RAM. If your budget is tight, you might look for a better deal on a pre-owned system—there are often old office PCs for around $150 with decent CPUs. Just make sure it has enough space for your GPU!

Good point! I've seen great deals on second-hand setups that could work well without breaking the bank.

The i5-8400 should be just fine for your programming needs. It offers solid performance for compiling and running Docker. Plus, keeping your GPU is a smart move if you plan on gaming. Many modern CPUs can handle programming tasks without issues, so you're definitely on the right track!

Exactly! The 8400 is good enough for programming and won't bottleneck your GPU for gaming either.

If you're having issues with Docker freezing, it might be related to RAM. 16GB is pretty much a minimum these days, and ideally, you want 32GB if you're running multiple applications and Docker containers at once. The i5-8400 should handle your programming tasks fine, though!
