Is the Intel i9 12900KS Still a Good Option for a PC Build?

I'm planning to build a new PC and have found the Intel i9 12900KS at a brand new price of $290. Is this a good deal? Should I consider a newer processor for the same price? Also, would this CPU pair well with a B580 motherboard or the rumored B770? My main use will be CAD and sim racing, and I'd prefer both the CPU and GPU to be Intel.

The 12900KS is one of Intel's best chips. The price is fair—though not a steal—and you’ll definitely need a good cooler, either a 360 AIO or a large air tower. On the bright side, you can also use a DDR4 motherboard with it.

The 12900KS offers performance on par with the i7 13700K and 14700K, so it should handle your tasks really well, even with a powerful GPU like the 5090. Just make sure to invest in a solid AIO cooler, like a 420mm Liquid Freezer 3, and a reliable power supply—I'd recommend at least a 1000W one since this chip can run quite hot and draw a lot of power.

Yeah, it's absolutely still viable! I use one myself and love it. I also have a 14900K on my other PC, and both perform remarkably.

Consider going for a 14600K instead. It might perform better and potentially be cheaper in the long run. Just out of curiosity, what's your maximum budget, and where are you based?

I can spend over 2000, including peripherals, and I'm from Singapore.

I personally have the 12900K, and despite several newer Intel generations being out, it still performs exceptionally well. The $290 price for the KS variant seems like a good deal, not overly expensive.

This CPU is fantastic for CAD and sim racing, and at $290, you’re getting a pretty solid deal. I totally get you wanting to stick with Intel for the CPU because of your workload. However, why limit yourself to Intel for the GPU? AMD or Nvidia could provide better options, especially in terms of performance and price.

I hear you! In Singapore, the B580 is one of the few GPUs that's close to MSRP, while the Nvidia 5070 is going for 1200 SGD, which is crazy.
