Is the LeetCode grind really harming new grads?

Hey folks, I'm a recent graduate and I've been stuck in the LeetCode grind for months now. Honestly, I'm feeling burnt out. I spend hours every day solving abstract puzzles that don't seem relevant to what a developer does in real life. My portfolio isn't getting the attention it deserves because I'm too busy learning how to reverse a linked list in multiple ways. When I finally get to interviews, there's so much pressure and a ticking clock to code perfectly without any bugs. It just feels so unrealistic and like the system is designed to trip me up. Is the interview process broken, or am I just missing something? How are you all landing jobs without losing your sanity?

You bring up a good point! The pressure to memorize is ridiculous. Yes, some interview questions can feel pointless, but I think it's about understanding how to approach problems rather than rote memorization. It’s also important for companies to assess not just if you can code but how well you fit into their team dynamics. Overall, it’s about balance, not just getting the ‘right’ answer in a scripted time frame.

Right! Interviews should be about seeing if you're adaptable and can communicate well, but too often it feels like you're just a number in a system.

LeetCode really seems like a lazy way to filter candidates and doesn’t accurately reflect the skills needed on the job. It’s become such a bottleneck in the hiring process. Instead of focusing solely on those puzzles, you should also build your portfolio with real projects. It’s how you demonstrate your actual skills to potential employers!

Honestly, I think it's all about perspective. Not every interview experience is the same! Some companies are more relaxed and focus on your capacity to learn rather than just coding in a high-pressure environment. Don’t let the process get to you too much. If you’re solid in your foundation of knowledge, just keep applying and improving through each experience.

Exactly! Each interview can be seen as a learning opportunity. Don't overthink it; treat it like practice!

Totally feel you, the LeetCode grind seems like a trap designed for failure. When I was job hunting, I found this tool called Interview Coder that simulates interviews and gives instant feedback. It helped me prep for interviews in a way that felt closer to reality, and really took the edge off of the high-pressure situation.
