Is the MSI B650 Tomahawk a Good Alternative to the B850 Tomahawk WiFi?

Hey everyone! I'm gearing up to build my first PC and initially wanted to go with the MSI B850 Tomahawk WiFi. I'm planning to pair it with a 9070XT GPU and a 9800X3D CPU, with hopes of upgrading to 1440p gaming in the future. However, the total cost is pretty much maxing out my budget. So I'm wondering: is it reasonable to consider downgrading to the B650 model, or are there more affordable B850 options out there? I'm especially interested because in the UK, the B850 is around £220 while the B650 is about £150, and I'm not sure if the price difference is worth it. I found the B850 recommended by Kitguru, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on whether I really need to stick with the B850 or if the B650 would suffice for my gaming plans, particularly with titles like MSFS and DCS, and maybe some light video editing down the line. Thanks for any advice! 🙂

Honestly, unless you specifically need WiFi 7 or PCIe 5.0, the B650 should be perfectly fine for your needs. Most likely, you won't miss those features. Just figure out if you really need them before making the decision!

Thanks for the advice! I’m leaning towards the B650 now. Do you think it will still get BIOS updates for future CPUs?

You might want to check this link for some motherboard options. If you're looking to save a bit, consider something like the Aorus Elite which could fit the bill! The B850 mainly offers PCIe 5.0 and USB4 support, which might not be necessary for you right now.

I'll definitely look into that. I don't think I really need PCIe 5.0 or USB4, so it sounds like the B650 could work!
