Is the Ryzen 7 5800X3D Really Worth the Upgrade from a 3900X?

I'm looking to upgrade my CPU, currently running a Ryzen 9 3900X alongside an RTX 3080. I've seen a lot of discussions suggesting that the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is the best upgrade for the AM4 socket. However, it has fewer cores and threads than my current setup, and its speed is slightly lower too. I'm wondering if the 5800X3D really qualifies as an upgrade, or if I should consider another CPU. Budget isn't an issue; I just want to ensure I'm making a worthwhile upgrade.

If you're sticking with AM4 for gaming, it’s clearly 5800X3D > 5700X3D > 5600X3D. Check out some benchmarks on YouTube for a detailed comparison on gaming and productivity. Definitely look into Hardware Unboxed for solid content!

For gaming, the 5800X3D is the best option in the AM4 socket. The additional 64MB of L3 cache can really boost gaming performance. Keep in mind, though, that most games don’t utilize more than 6 cores, making the extra cores of your 3900X less useful. However, it’s worth noting that the 5800X3D can be hard to find and is pricey on the used market since it's been around for a while. If you’re after a solid upgrade, you might also want to consider the 5700X3D if you can find it.

I really regret not grabbing one of the AM4 3D chips when they were readily available. Stuck on my current setup and not seeing a good reason to jump to a 5900X from my 5800X.

You could go for the 5900X as a more straightforward upgrade, but I made the jump from a 3900X to a 5950X, and while it helped, the gains were less than I expected. For pure gaming performance, the 5800X3D is unbeatable, but you'll be sacrificing some benefits if you need more cores for productivity.

I swapped my bigger processor for an X3D and while it seemed slower on paper, I actually didn’t notice any drop in performance. It surprisingly boosted my frame rates in demanding games like Cyberpunk by about 20fps.
