Hey everyone! I'm looking to upgrade my gaming rig that I built back in 2020. Here are my current specs:
- ASUS ROG STRIX X570-E GAMING motherboard
- NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER
- AMD Ryzen 9 3900X CPU
- 16GB Kingston HyperX RAM @ 1197MHz
- Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 1TB
- ASUS TUF Gaming VG249 monitor (1920x1080@144Hz)
- Corsair TX750M, 750W PSU
I recently got my hands on some Kingston Fury Beast RGB RAM, totaling 64GB and running at 3600 MHz. I'm considering a few upgrades, including an MSI GeForce RTX 5080 and a Corsair HX1000i PSU, along with a Samsung 990 PRO SSD with 2TB capacity.
I've been reading that pairing the RTX 5080 with my current Ryzen 9 3900X might not be the best move performance-wise. Some folks have suggested looking into the AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D or 5800X3D for better synergy, but those models seem to be discontinued and pretty hard to find now. I'm not ready to replace my motherboard just yet, so I'm wondering if there are decent alternatives that work well with the AM4 socket and the RTX 5080. Additionally, I'm thinking of moving from a 1080p to a 4K monitor, which adds another layer to my decision-making. Any recommendations on compatibility and potentially good 4K monitors for competitive FPS gaming? Thanks!

I switched from a 3700X and a 1070Ti to a 5700X3D and a 4080. The upgrade made a big difference but I still feel like I could’ve done fine with the 3700X for a while longer. If you're not hitting extreme FPS targets, your setup is workable even now at 1440p, but I totally get wanting to prepare for 4K down the line!
If you can snag a 5700X3D for under $200, that would be a solid choice to pair with your RTX 5080. Otherwise, looking at the 5800X3D is worthwhile too. Just keep in mind that if you primarily play CPU-intensive games, you might see some bottlenecking with the 3900X. But if you're mainly gaming at 1440p, your setup should be fine for quite a while!
I’d argue that even at around $220 for a 5700X3D, it could be worth it. Unless you’re into super demanding games, it should still perform well enough without needing to switch to AM5 right now.
Honestly, if your focus is 4K gaming, the RTX 5080 might be fine with the 3900X for most titles. You should consider getting a cheaper CPU like the 5600X for now, as it might do just fine for 4K and you’d upgrade later when AM6 comes out.

Yeah, I think just looking at the 5700X3D prices shows how tricky things are. They’re high now, and you might not find a good deal without going the used route.
