I'm on the hunt for a new CPU cooler because my current setup (Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE) isn't cutting it for my Ryzen 7 9800X3D, especially when my CPU hits around 80°C while gaming. I know the Phantom Spirit is pretty well regarded despite being four years old, but I'm looking for something that can give me better performance without breaking the bank—I'm not ready to shell out over $100 for just a slight improvement. I'm also limited by my setup since my large GPU takes up a lot of space and won't allow for liquid coolers with three fans in the front of my Corsair 4000D Airflow case. Any recommendations?

Before diving into new coolers, consider reapplying thermal paste if it’s been a while and check your case fan arrangement for optimal airflow. There aren't many air coolers that will significantly outperform your current one, though.
There are quite a few recent Thermalright models you might consider. The Peerless Assassin 140, Phantom Spirit Evo, and the Royal Praetor 130 could be potential upgrades, though some have reported quality control issues. If you’re in the US, the Jiushark Jf800 diamond is worth a look, too, though it might be hard to find. Just keep in mind that the Noctua NH D15 G2 is a solid option, but it comes with a hefty price tag.
Those Thermalright models sound interesting, but I agree, Noctua seems overpriced for the performance.
80°C is generally safe for gaming as long as you’re not bothered by fan noise, but if you want cooling suggestions, sharing your CPU model helps!
Thanks for pointing that out! It’s a Ryzen 7 9800X3D.
If you want, you can just swap out your current fans for higher quality ones. Premium fans like the Phanteks T30 can move much more air, but that’s an extra expense. Even adjusting your current fan setup can make a big difference; ensure your front intake fan is working well, as it helps direct airflow over your CPU cooler.
You might find some good video reviews on air coolers from Hardware Canucks. The Royal Praetor is another option that's technically better, but the difference isn’t huge.
I did that recently, unfortunately! Still looking for options.
