I'm currently using an old Z170 Pro motherboard with an ALC1150 audio codec, and I'm considering upgrading to either an A520M or a B450M as budget options. These new boards come with ALC892 or ALC897 codecs. As someone who really enjoys music and values sound quality, I'm curious if the difference in audio quality will be significant. If it's only about 5%, I could live with that, but I'm worried it might be a downgrade overall. Any insights on the sound quality comparison would be appreciated!

Honestly, if your ears aren't trained, you probably won't notice much difference between the two. If you are serious about audio, though, neither option is likely to meet the bar of acceptable quality.
Are you actually using a headset that connects through the 3.5mm jack? For most casual users, there's hardly a difference. But for audiophiles, both options will still be inadequate.
Yes, I think I use a 3.5mm jack. I feel like most people do! I have a Philips Audio SHP9500, and I think it sounds great overall.
If you really care about sound quality, you might want to think about getting an external DAC or amplifier instead. The built-in audio on motherboards usually isn't great. It can really elevate your listening experience.
I was considering a high-end motherboard thinking it would have a great sound card, but I guess I'm misinformed. I'll check out external options, thanks for the tip!
It probably doesn't matter which board you choose, just grab a dedicated sound card or DAC. They’ll deliver way better performance than the integrated audio on any motherboard.
Will do, thank you!
Most modern motherboards have similar sound quality, which isn’t really aimed at audiophiles. You should invest in an external DAC or AMP for better performance instead.
Thanks! I thought a high-end motherboard would handle it, but you've changed my mind.
As an audio enthusiast who builds my own speakers, I highly doubt you'll notice any difference between the two boards. Generally, the biggest improvements in sound come from the amplifier, not the motherboard.
I also built my speakers and love them! I never thought my motherboard would need an amp too. Thanks for the info!
If sound quality is your priority, definitely consider a USB DAC and an amplifier. Your listening experience will improve a lot compared to the onboard sound.
I'll look into that, thanks!
Got it! That makes sense.
