I'm curious if anyone has successfully created a proper open-source WhatsApp client for Linux that goes beyond just being a fancy web interface. Do you think Meta would take issue with this, or is it simply impractical?

Meta is pretty strict about unofficial clients, and using one could risk your account getting banned. Honestly, the web version works decently enough if you set it up as a web app using something like Epiphany. It's not perfect, but it gets the job done pretty well. Just a heads up, you can't tweak the UI in the web version at all.
Yeah, I don't think we'll see anything beyond web wrappers for WhatsApp on Linux. Even the Windows client is basically a browser in disguise, though it does support calls, unlike the web version.
I hear you! I'm really hoping that as more people in Europe move away from U.S. tech, we might see new platforms pop up. Still, some European governments are pushing for backdoors in apps, which might scare off developers from making apps like Signal even better. Personally, I’ve ditched all of Meta's products.
