I have this older Sony KDL-48R470B television and I'm curious if there's a method to upgrade its firmware or something similar to allow streaming services like YouTube, as a smart TV would. Is it possible to achieve that without resorting to an external TV box?

If you're looking for an affordable option, I highly recommend getting a Chromecast. It's easy to plug into the HDMI port and comes with its own remote. I’ve had great luck with it, especially with my old TVs!
Unfortunately, you can't really upgrade the TV to make it smart. It's an older model, so the most effective way to get smart features would be through a streaming device. It's a simpler and more effective solution than trying to tinker with firmware updates.
Your best bet would be to connect a cheap mini PC or a device like a Fire TV Stick or Roku. They make it super easy to stream services. An old computer could also work as a media center if you want to go that route!
