Is this a solid starter PC build for future upgrades?

I'm currently using a PS4 Slim and I'm considering making the switch to PCs. I'm looking at a build that includes an Intel i3 12100f processor and an RX 580 8GB graphics card for about $230. I also have a FHD 60HZ monitor and a basic keyboard and mouse setup to use for now. My plan is to upgrade to an RX 6600 and an i5 12400f in a couple of years, specifically in 2026. By the way, I've decided to go with the R5 3600 and a B450 motherboard for this build.

The pricing is really good for the performance you're getting. If you can find the R5 3600 for the same price, I'd definitely recommend going with that instead. It's a solid choice!

What makes the 3600 a better option?

This build is decent for now, but just remember that the LGA1700 platform is pretty much already outdated since it’s on its way to being two generations behind. You can still find stronger CPUs, but they might not be produced for much longer. The same goes for AM4, so I'd suggest going with whichever 6-core CPU is cheaper, with the idea of upgrading the whole platform in a few years. Most games are starting to prefer at least 8 cores nowadays!

That's good to know! Would it be wise to stick with the R5 3600 then?

Totally agree! Just keep in mind that older 4-core CPUs are becoming less viable for gaming.
