My cousin has been complaining about slow WiFi in his room, so I suggested he check for an ethernet port. He found a port that looks like it could be one, but I'm not sure. He doesn't have an extra ethernet cable to test it, and I don't really have much tech experience. Can anyone tell me if this is an ethernet port? If it is, will it be as easy as just connecting it to his laptop? Thanks!

That port looks like an older model, which generally means it’s an RJ11, typically used for landline phones. If that’s the case, you won’t be able to use it as an ethernet connection right out of the box. Technically, you could swap the RJ11 connectors for RJ45, but that's a delicate process. You might want to call in an electrician if you don’t feel confident in doing it yourself. Just a heads up, even if you manage to get it set up, it won't perform as well as a proper ethernet cable because it uses fewer wires.
It seems like it might be an RJ45 port, but keep in mind, for it to work, something has to be connected on the other end. If it’s only a phone line, it won't help with ethernet.
Yeah, the way it’s set up looks more like a phone jack. If it only has 4 wires, that’s definitely not going to work for ethernet.
