Is This Typical for a Helpdesk Tech Role?

I've been looking into a Helpdesk Technician position and the on-call rotation they mentioned is once a week from 5 PM to 8 AM. The frustrating part is that I would only get paid overtime (1.5x my base pay) for the time I actually spend helping customers over the phone. So, if I'm not on a call, I'm not getting paid. Is this setup normal?

It's definitely not ideal. In some places, you’d expect to at least get some stipend for being on call, plus overtime for any actual work. Not getting paid for all that time can really add up!

That sounds pretty standard, unfortunately. A lot of places have similar policies where you're expected to be on call without pay unless you actually get a call. It can feel a bit rough since it cuts into your personal time without any compensation unless you're actively helping someone.

Yeah, this kind of setup is quite normal across many tech jobs. Just keep in mind that while it's common, it doesn't have to be the standard you accept. If it's impacting your personal life too much, it might be worth pushing back or seeking alternatives.

I get what you're saying. If they don't pay a flat fee just for being available, I'd be hesitant to be on call. It's become common for companies to treat on-call time as just waiting time without pay, which really isn’t fair.
