Is Upgrading from 1080p to 1440p a Good Move?

I'm considering upgrading my monitor from my current 1080p 144Hz to a 1440p 144Hz model. For most story-driven games, I'd want to use the 2K resolution, but for competitive games, I plan to stick with 1080p for better frame rates. I have a couple of questions:
1. Does a native 1080p monitor perform better than a 1440p monitor running at 1080p?
2. Is the upgrade really worth it?

For context, I've got a Ryzen 5 5600X and a GTX 1660 Ti, but I'm looking into buying either the RTX 5060 Ti or the Radeon RX 9060 XT.

Scaling can be a bit weird on a 1440p for 1080p use, but it should be fine if you play in full screen. Between the RX 9060 XT and RTX 5060 Ti, I'd suggest getting the 16gb version of either one since they're quite comparable!

Definitely worth upgrading to 1440p! Just keep your 1080p monitor for competitive games. Trust me, downscaling from 1440p to 1080p looks awful. A native 1080p monitor will perform better than a 1440p monitor set to 1080p. Hope this helps!

I found a 27" monitor that can switch between 1080p and 1440p, which sounds cool. But seriously, keeping your current 1080p monitor while adding a 1440p one is a smart move!

Sounds interesting! Where can I find that monitor?

I just switched from 1080p 60Hz to 1440p 165Hz, and the higher refresh rate has been a game changer for me! Even if my RX 5700 XT struggles to hit over 60fps, playing CS2 at 165Hz is incredible!

The performance might be similar, but a 1080p image won't look as good on a 1440p screen because it doesn't scale cleanly. If you have the option to stick to 1080p natively, that's typically the better route.
