I'm looking to switch out my current 3900X setup for a 9800X3D, and I'm curious about the potential gains. My gaming setup includes a 38-inch ultrawide monitor with a resolution of 3840x1600 and I'm currently using 32GB of DDR4 RAM along with an RTX 4080. I plan to stick with the 4080 for now but want to know if the upgrade to a 9800X3D and possibly 32 or 64GB of DDR5 RAM will yield any noticeable improvements in gaming performance, specifically given my monitor's resolution. Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Honestly, at that resolution, you're so close to 4K that the CPU upgrade may not make as big a difference as you hope. I've gone through several CPU upgrades myself, and when gaming at higher resolutions, my older CPUs seem to handle the load just fine. I would suggest checking if your GPU is actually bottlenecking first. If you're hitting close to 100% GPU usage constantly, then upgrading won't help much.
I think you'd still gain benefits in CPU-heavy games, especially strategy titles. Also, using technologies like DLSS or FSR can shift the load towards the CPU, so the 9800X3D could improve your experience there. Even if you're mostly at 100% usage, you might see smoother frame rates overall, especially in those pesky 1% lows.
If your GPU is already maxed out at 100% usage in some games, you might not see much difference with a faster CPU. However, for games that are more CPU-intensive, like Space Marine 2, you could experience a big jump in frame rates. Those are the kind of scenarios where the upgrade really shines!
