I recently bought a Ryzen 7 5800X3D for $300. My current system has a 7800 XT, 32GB of DDR4-3200 memory, a 1TB SSD, a 1TB NVMe drive, and a 1440p 165Hz monitor. The 5800X3D is cooled by a 360mm AIO mounted at the front because my case has limited radiator placement.
I can currently put together an AM5 upgrade using a Wi-Fi B850 motherboard, Ryzen 7 9800X3D, a bundled 240mm Cooler Master AIO, 32GB of Corsair DDR5, and a Montech TG3 case for about $950 before tax. After returning the 5800X3D, selling my old 5600G, DDR4 kits, spare AIO, and current case, I estimate the upgrade would cost roughly $100–$200 extra overall.
Since AM5 is expected to support several future CPU generations, this could give me a longer upgrade path. However, RAM prices are high, and my 7800 XT may still be the limiting component at 1440p. Would this upgrade provide enough real-world improvement to justify the cost and effort, or should I keep the 5800X3D and save for a stronger graphics card later?

Consider the time involved in listing, negotiating, packing, and shipping all those parts. Even if the benchmark numbers look attractive, the performance gain may not justify the hassle unless you genuinely want to rebuild on AM5.
You likely won’t see a major difference with the 7800 XT installed. The 9800X3D becomes much more useful when paired with a substantially faster graphics card or when targeting very high frame rates in CPU-limited games. For your current setup, upgrading the GPU would probably produce a more noticeable improvement.
If the final cost really stays close to $100 and you want the longer platform life, I’d be more inclined to do it. At $200 or more, keeping the 5800X3D is the safer value choice, especially since you’re currently GPU-limited.
I’d keep the 5800X3D. It’s still an extremely capable gaming CPU, and with a 7800 XT at 1440p you probably won’t notice much improvement from moving to the 9800X3D. Unless you’re planning a high-end GPU upgrade soon or playing especially CPU-heavy games, the money is probably better saved.
The AM5 system is the more future-proof option, and the upgrade could make sense if you can truly get it down to around $100–$200. You’d have newer memory, a current platform, and an easier path to future CPUs. The main question is whether the performance gain matters to you now rather than later.

The resale estimates may also be optimistic, so the actual upgrade cost could end up higher than expected.
