Hey everyone,I'm currently rocking a Ryzen 7 5700X3D along with an RTX 4070 Ti Super and 32GB of 3600 MT/s RAM, all on a B550M Pro4 motherboard. I mostly game at 1440p. I'm contemplating an upgrade to AM5 and have my eye on a few components:
- Motherboard: MSI B850M GAMING PLUS WIFI6E for about $190
- CPU: 9800X3D for around $536
- RAM: 2x16GB at 6400 MT/s CL32 for about $196
I plan to stick with my current GPU. Now I've got a few questions:
1. Is the 9800X3D overkill for my gaming setup at 1440p with the 4070 Ti Super? Should I consider the 7800X3D instead, priced at roughly $398?
2. Are there any budget-friendly motherboard options worth looking at if I go for the 9800X3D or the 7800X3D?
3. Is upgrading to AM5 right now worth the investment, or should I just wait for AM6?
4. Would it make more sense to upgrade my GPU instead? Currently, the cheapest 5080 is around $1,462 while a 5070 Ti goes for about $967.
Thanks for any insights! 🙂
P.S. My current gaming lineup includes titles like Counter-Strike 2, Kingdom Come Deliverance II, SCUM, and Cyberpunk with heavy graphics mods, and I sometimes stream games on Twitch. My budget for this upgrade is between $950 and $1,000.

Honestly, I'd recommend holding off for another generation. The 5700X3D is still a solid CPU, and your current GPU is great too. The performance gain from a CPU upgrade might not be worth the expense yet. Consider saving for the next gen or putting that cash toward a GPU upgrade instead!
If you're also feeling the pinch while streaming, stick with your current setup. The 4070 Ti should handle most of your games decently well, and you can always push for a GPU upgrade later when prices drop.
Before you jump into an upgrade, it’s crucial to assess how your 5700X3D is performing right now. Upgrading to the 9800X3D might be overkill unless you're running very demanding settings. If you mainly play fast-paced games like Counter-Strike 2, the gains from the 9800X3D on a 240Hz monitor may not justify the price difference over the 7800X3D.
Thanks for the input! Yeah, I'm unsure what kind of jump I'd get in those games. I'll have to check benchmarks.
At today’s RAM prices, upgrading to AM5 isn’t really cost-effective unless you desperately need higher frame rates. Sticking with the 5700X3D while looking at a 5070 Ti or maybe even saving for the 5080 in the future would be a wiser choice.

Appreciate it! That makes a lot of sense. I might focus on the GPU upgrade.
