I recently bought a used gaming PC featuring a 5600x processor, a 4060TI, and 32GB of DDR4 RAM, all for $750. I've now upgraded the CPU to a 5700x3d and added an RTX 5090 for better performance. I mainly use this setup for VR sim racing with my Quest 3, and I'm planning to switch to a higher-end PC VR headset soon. Currently, I can play on high and ultra settings at 120hz, with some performance dips here and there. I love tweaking my setup, but I don't overclock. Now, I'm considering upgrading to AM5 to optimize for the RTX 5090. I'm looking to get some advice on whether moving to AM5 will provide a noticeable performance boost with a 7800x3d or a 9800x3d CPU. I'm not trying to build the best possible rig, but I'd like to see a difference without going overboard on spending. I also want some guidance on picking out RAM and SSDs that would complement my new motherboard.

Whether upgrading to AM5 is worth it really depends on the games you play and your settings. The performance boost from switching to a 9800x3d is only about 2% better than the 7800x3d at 4K resolution. That said, some games really can take advantage of the X3D architecture more than others. Also, considering your history of upgrading in less than two years, it seems like you're eager to keep boosting your rig. Just make sure it's the performance you want, not just the upgrade for the sake of it.
Right, and since you're into sim racing, getting the right settings and gear is key. I wouldn’t rush into AM5 unless the benefits are clear for your specific games.
Upgrading to AM5 can definitely provide some improvements for your VR gaming experience, especially with PCIe 4.0 and 5.0 support for faster SSDs. But if you’re looking for value, the 7800x3d should suffice unless you're planning on going all-out with other upgrades later. As for RAM, try to get something with good speed and timings, like DDR5 at 6000MHz or higher for better performance. It’s good you’re thinking of adding another SSD, too; more storage is always helpful, especially for larger game files.
Awesome! I appreciate the insight on RAM and SSD choices. I’ll definitely consider speeds since it sounds like that’ll complement my setup well.

Thanks for the info! I see what you mean about the performance gains being marginal. I do spend most of my time sim racing, so I want the best visuals possible. Maybe I should look into how each CPU performs specifically with the sim games I enjoy.
