Is Upgrading from an I5-9400F to Ryzen 5 5600 Worth It Given DDR5 Prices?

I've been struggling with an old mid-range CPU (an i5-9400F) in a build that includes a new RTX 5070 GPU. My current setup has 16GB of RAM, which just isn't cutting it anymore, especially since my boot times have slowed down and it hangs a lot since the Windows 11 update. I previously considered upgrading to a motherboard that supports the newer AMD chipsets with DDR5 RAM, but honestly, I'd rather keep my existing RAM for now. The Ryzen 5 5600 is priced around $135, and a compatible motherboard is about $85, totaling just over $200, compared to around $650 if I opt for 32GB of DDR5 RAM along with the CPU and motherboard. Considering my CPU is bottlenecking my system, is this upgrade a smart investment? Should I wait until DDR5 prices drop and spend more later, or will the Ryzen 5 5600 significantly improve my experience for basic tasks like gaming and browsing? I'm open to any advice for navigating this frustrating market too.

You might want to explore alternatives like an LGA 1700 setup. It supports DDR4, and you'll get better performance than AM4. But if you want something solid now, a 9700K or 9900K could be the more sensible upgrade while you wait for DDR5 prices to come down. Plus, check your RAM's speed; if it’s under 3200MT, you're missing out on performance!

I’ll check my RAM speed! A fresh OS installation might also help clear up the boot time issues.

Upgrading to the Ryzen 5 5600 could definitely help, especially if your current RAM is a single stick, which can limit performance. But honestly, the i5-9400F doesn't lag too far behind the 5600—just a 5-10% increase in performance at best. You might also want to consider a used i7 like the 9700K; it's often cheaper and delivers comparable performance without needing to switch to newer tech.

I think holding off until DDR5 prices drop is a wise move. You could grab a used 9900K or something similar and add another 16GB stick of your current RAM for a budget-friendly boost. The market's crazy right now, so wait to see if prices stabilize before jumping into spending heaps on DDR5.
