Is Upgrading from DDR4 to DDR5 Worth the Cost Right Now?

I'm currently using 32 GB of DDR4 RAM at 3600 MHz (CL16) and thinking about switching to DDR5. However, to make this upgrade, I'd also need to replace my motherboard and processor. I'm curious about how much of a performance improvement I can expect in gaming between DDR4 and DDR5 if I keep the same CPU and GPU setup. The RAM costs significantly more than the CPU right now, so I'm concerned about that investment. Just for context, I have an Intel i5-12400F and a GeForce RTX 3060 12GB right now. I'm considering switching to an AMD Ryzen 7700 with a new graphics card like the 5070 series or just upgrading to an i5-14600KF with my current RAM and motherboard. How much of a difference would I notice in performance between these setups?

It really comes down to what you're gaming on. If you're playing competitive games at lower resolutions, the RAM speed matters less compared to having a strong CPU. I recommend checking out some recent performance tests; channels like Hardware Unboxed just released a video showing the differences.

Performance gains vary a lot based on your overall system. If you upgrade to a faster CPU along with DDR5, that combo can give you some nice improvements, especially in higher resolutions. Just keep in mind that your current CPU affects performance a lot more than RAM speed does.

The performance difference between DDR4 and DDR5 is there, but it’s not huge. You might see around 15% better performance with DDR5 on certain setups, but if you're still using an older CPU, that could make a more noticeable difference than changing RAM alone. Prices for DDR5 can be pretty high right now too, so it's worth weighing your options.

Honestly, it depends. If you're aiming for high-performance gaming, yeah, DDR5 is better, but if you're at 1440p or lower, you might not notice as much. Also, if you're waiting for a good deal on those parts during sales like Black Friday, it might be worth it. Otherwise, maybe stick to what you have for now.

It's probably not worth spending a ton on a new motherboard and DDR5 just for a marginal performance increase. Most of the time, you'll see only a minor boost in FPS. If you're considering an upgrade, you might be better off putting that money towards a newer CPU, which could have a bigger impact on your gaming experience.
